Pre-certification Assessments (PCA)
Pre-certification Assessment (PCA)
This series of assessments are designed to assess general and specific HVAC technical knowledge. The focus of this program is NATE certification or a similar HVAC industry examination, which establish an individual’s level of professionalism and technical competence. Assessment content is randomly selected from a pool of content categories and then compiled as a total exam. The weight of the content category depends on what exam is being taken.
Pools of content categories include:
• Customer Service
• Trade Math
• HVAC Applied Physics
• HVAC Electrical
• Air Distribution Specific
• Water Distribution Specific
• Fuel Gas Specific
• Air Conditioning Specific
• Heat Pump Specific
After one completes and submits their assessment, immediate feedback is provided. In addition, an e-mail will be sent with a performance report that can be printed. This report will tell the student where his or her strengths and weaknesses are based on their assessment. The report will recommend a specific course of action to follow regarding additional study or indicate that the student is prepared for their certification exam.
The pre-certification assessment (PCA) is selected by the NATE certification that the student is preparing for. A list is shown below:
Core – Installation Level
Core - Service Level
Air Distribution – Service Level
Gas Heat Air – Service Level
Heat Pump – Service Level

Mentored-Self Pace Course Delivery
men·tor (n. A wise and trusted counselor or teacher
Definition:
In a mentored course, a student works one-on-one with an instructor in a self-paced manner, meaning the student works to complete a course at their own pace within the subscription timeframe (typically 60 days). The instructor, who is an industry expert, is assigned at the time of course registration and serves as the student’s mentor throughout the duration of the course. The student is notified via e-mail of the instructor name and contact information within 24 hours of registration.
All course activity is done “virtually” (online). Students have access to their course 24/7 so they set their own schedule, however they are expected to meet all course requirements by the end of the course, seeking guidance and support from the instructor as needed. All communication between student and instructor is done via email.
As a mentor, the instructor’s primary role is to provide a personal contact for the student as well as serve as an expert learning coach. In this role, the instructor:
• Provides valuable expertise and guidance on the course subject matter
• Seeks additional subject matter expertise when necessary to
• assist with concepts or learning objectives
• Monitors student progress and exams results
• Assists with administrative and content issues within a course
• Is approachable, available and responsive via email communication
This Mentored Self-Paced learning approach can be thought of as getting private lessons; there is one student and one instructor.
Key Aspects:
• Self-paced
• Mentored learning with industry expert
• One-on-one interaction with instructor
• Instructor monitoring, assistance & guidance
Recommended For:
Students who prefer to work at their own pace with instructor guidance and support.
Grading System:
Mentored students are graded on the following:
• Quizzes
• Module Exams
• Final Exam
To obtain NATE Recognized CEU credit, students must make a final grade of 75% or higher.
